Aberaeron a delightfully planned Georgian town, building of a port at the mouth of the river Aeron, being the brainchild of a local cleric – the Reverend Alban Jones-Gwynne – building began in 1807 and included quays, stone piers and two squares around which were erected terraced houses.
Architecture
Aberaeron’s most notable feature is its architecture – one house in every four is listed as being of special architectural or historical interest. The graciously designed town just invites you to walk around it and feast your eyes on the subtle differences between the houses.
Harbour
Once a thriving herring fishing port, now a days leisure boats play a major role in the life of the town. Aberaeron is a popular shopping centre and also offers a wide selection of crafts and local produce at the Clôs Pengarreg Crafts Centre. Clôs Pengarreg a concentration of craft producers and is a destination in itself.
Whatever you you choose to do on your visit to Aberaeron, most people find it difficult to leave without enjoying a honey ice-cream – by the Bee Museum and the Aberaeron Sea Aquarium.
Aberaeron and the river Aeron
Inland, from Aberaeron, follow the Aeron valley, past Llanerchaeron Mansion – the restored National Trust property opened to the public for the first time in 2002. A cycleway leads from Aberaeron to Llanerchaeron. The road leads onward from Llanerchaeron to Felinfach and Talsarn, where Dylan Thomas was fond of visiting – as the name of his daughter “Aeronwy” testifies.
